Funny and Captivating, Athenos' 2011 Yiayia Commercials Win Our Hearts

Funny and Captivating, Athenos’ 2011 Yiayia Commercials Win Our Hearts While Appealing to our Funny Bones

According to the official Athenos Youtube page:
Yiayia (Greek, for grandmother) is a fan of simple, respectful food made the Greek way. That’s why she approves of ATHENOS. And that’s why she doesn’t approve of anything else.

And the results are fantastic.

Yiayia on Parenting

This one plays a bit on the current state of affairs in the US with more stay-at-home dad’s than there were in the previous three decades!

Yiayia on Fashion

Can you say the word Prostitute on TV these days? Or is this one reserved for Late Night TV?

Yiayia on Relationships

We love how the narrator never lets the main characters finish what they’re saying, because Yiayia couldn’t care less, and neither does the viewer!

The great creative minds at Mentos continue to make us laugh

The great creative minds at Mentos continue to make us laugh

I absolutely love the new Mentos commercial. It’s amazing. I laughed so hard when I saw it that I got a warm gushy feeling inside, that made me take action…I went out and bought a pack of those sweet little candies.

Watch this clip and see if you don’t at least get a large smile plastered to your face:

Click here to view the embedded video.

Now as far as I’m concerned my wife, and all previous girlfriends, have always reacted this way to the sight of spiders and the look on the guy’s face is classic (“Oh, come on!”). The intro is totally relatable and interesting/short enough to keep your attention. Annual Doritos SuperBowl Commercial Contest entrants take note!

When the spider throws the guy around the room like a rag doll you are thrown for a huge hilarious loop, which, just happens to be the whole point of the ad. The fact that even though there is a mix of flavors in their Mentos Rainbow brand mints you still know what’s coming next. You know, unlike sweet-tarts, starburst, skittles etc. Great way to re-enforce and drive home the concept as that is the key to making people remember you. And that’s the whole point of this advertising gig isn’t it?

The Superbowl had more winners and losers this year than just those who played a ball game on that grass.

The Doritos spots were inventive, but not really impressive (I’m wondering if those were really the best of the submitted ads for their annual super bowl video contest).

Some of our own favorites were most definitely the E-trade babies, the Simpsons Coke ad, and The Griswold’s cameo in the Home Away spot.

The winner for us hands down though, was the Google ad. It cost practically nothing and had a storyline that was cute and could connect with both males and females (a LARGE majority of the ads this year had a machoman tint to them, which only works at alienating the multitudes of ladies that love watching the game).

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE AD SPOT?
